Liszt composed an immense volume of piano works, making it difficult to grasp their full scope, and many pieces remain rarely performed even today. The "Five Piano Pieces" are among these, largely unknown. This is likely not because the pieces are inferior or lacking in substance, but rather because they do not demand Liszt's characteristic brilliant virtuosity and are all small-scale works, making them difficult to place at the center of a program. Composed between 1865 and 1879, all are small-scale, nocturne-like pieces, each spanning only one to three pages in score. While the collection is easy to play and elegant, some instances of somewhat unstable harmony appear, offering a glimpse into the atonal tendencies he would reach in his later years.
In some cases, pieces 1-4 are grouped as "Four Pieces," with the fifth piece, "Sospiri," treated as a standalone work.
