Composed in 1880, this is Debussy's earliest extant piano piece. It is in B minor and features a rhythm characteristic of Bohemia, with accents on weak beats. The main melody is initially played by the right hand (soprano), then shifts to an inner voice, before moving between the right and left hands. While one hand plays the melody, the other provides light, bouncing chords, lending a sense of airiness to the piece. It modulates to B major, and after a brightly sung passage, returns to the tonic key. Following a transitional passage of arpeggiated chords, the theme is recapitulated. Furthermore, the theme reappears with a different harmonization from the opening subject, and after the left hand displays light movement with intricate passages, the piece concludes quietly, as if fading away.
