Composed at the end of 1926, this work was commissioned for a collection of contemporary piano pieces planned by Schott. It consists of four very short pieces, each satirizing the styles of composers then considered avant-garde: Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Bartók, and Hindemith. The title "For Children" is believed to be Korngold's ironic jab, suggesting that the work of these four composers was childish. Due to Hindemith's works also being published by Schott, and concerns that the satirized composers might be offended, its publication was initially cancelled. However, it was published in the November 1931 issue of the music magazine Musikleben, and its premiere took place posthumously on May 31, 1978, in Liverpool, England.
