In 1841 in Berlin, Mendelssohn composed three sets of variations: the Variations sérieuses, the Variations in B-flat major, and these Variations in E-flat major. Compared to the Variations sérieuses, which are known as a masterpiece, these variations are technically less demanding. The average performance time is approximately 8 minutes and 30 seconds.
Theme: Andante assai espressivo
A gentle melody is sung in the soprano, supported by chords divided between the left and right hands. One should be mindful of both dynamic changes and shifts in tonality.
Variation 1
The theme, transformed into sixteenth notes, engages in a dialogue between the bass and treble parts.
Variation 2
Above the sextuplets in the left hand, the transformed theme is sung smoothly. The right hand should differentiate between the melody and other notes.
Variation 3: Più vivace
In contrast to Variation 2, this variation has a crisp rhythm. The melody, consisting of sixteenth-note chords, engages in a dialogue between the bass and treble. The theme's melody is heard at various pitches, creating a pleasing perspectival effect for the ear.
Variation 4: Più moderato
The atmosphere shifts dramatically from Variation 3, creating a quiet impression. In the bass, octaves on B are continuously struck in a steady rhythm, making this variation feel less varied compared to others.
Variation 5
This is the longest variation compared to the other shorter ones. In contrast to the character of Variation 4, it possesses a dynamic brilliance. The theme is sung in eighth notes over an energetic accompaniment of thirty-second notes, developing towards an ff climax. Here, within the sustained octaves created by the left hand, the thirty-second notes resonate brightly, producing a very beautiful effect. Subsequently, the gentle theme is recalled twice, bringing the piece to a quiet close.
