Similar to 24 Études de Grande Caractère, Op. 692, this is a collection of etudes that presupposes the presence of a listener. Whereas Op. 692 belongs to the genre then known as 'concert etudes,' this work, as its title suggests, is classified as 'salon etudes.' The collection is smaller in scale and possesses an intimate rather than a rigorous atmosphere. In the French edition, No. 2 is titled 'Toccata' and No. 3 is titled 'Tarantella,' but from a stylistic perspective, these titles are clearly reversed, indicating an error by the publisher. The table above displays this point with the correction applied.
