Composed in 1908, the same year as Les Baigneuses au soleil (Women Bathing in the Sun). While many of Sévérac's compositions are written in suite form, these are important works as standalone piano pieces. In their treatment of water, common elements can also be observed with Ravel's Jeux d'eau (1901).
Whereas Les Baigneuses au soleil evokes a bright daytime image, this piece exudes the enchanting light and fragrance of night. It bears the subtitle "Night Dance," and the notes playfully sparkle atop a sinuous rhythm. The rapid changes in tempo, tonality, register, and dynamics further accentuate the impression of a free and capricious piece. While it is a wonderfully pleasant work with sensuous and voluptuous sonorities, performers should be careful to maintain a firm foundation without allowing their body's center of gravity to lift, even as they listen to the piercing high-pitched sounds. Performance duration is approximately 7 minutes.
