A monumental work that concludes his compositions from the first half of the century. Following a lengthy introduction reminiscent of an opera overture, a simple and humorous dance-like theme appears. Its playful tone seems almost incongruous with the serious atmosphere of the introduction. The latter half of this theme is first varied twice in B-flat major. The first variation employs a technique of embedding the main melody within arpeggios, while the second uses a rapid alternation of hands; both are techniques favored by virtuosos of the era. The second variation, Andante Religioso, is a magnificent chorale. In its latter half, thick, organ-like chords enhance the religious atmosphere. Next, after a brief interlude, the work enters a three-part finale. Here, the theme appears freely varied in 6/8 time, along with motifs from the introduction. The theme reappears in the concluding coda, which is arguably the greatest challenge for the performer. In the section with continuous octave leaps, the prescribed tempo is quarter note = 160, and on the final page, with its continuous arpeggios, a blistering speed of quarter note = 176 is demanded. It is a masterpiece that reveals the fiery spirit hidden within an elegant salon composer. Dedicated to Infanta Isabel II of Spain.
