“Les joies du soir” (The Joys of Evening) is the 26th poem in the 3rd volume of Victor Hugo’s works. In the poem, “evening” signifies both a joyful time when people share drinks and the “evening” of life, i.e., the moment when the dying step into the afterlife. The poet, in a solemn 12-syllable style, contemplates everyday life and writes about the very boundary between life and death that he perceives beyond it. Ravinat’s piece is written in the style of a waltz, symbolizing everyday, worldly pleasures. It is in ternary form, and in the main section, a beautiful modulation from G major to B-flat major is striking. In the middle section and coda, chromatic tremolos are inserted, interrupting the graceful waltz melody. Could this be the image of “death” that Ravinat perceived behind the everyday?
