Lavinée's works with opus numbers extend up to Opus 115 (Divertimento No. 3), published in 1898. The last score he published was "The Last Etude" in 1903, composed when he was in his mid-80s. The "Minuet," which concludes this collection, is a dignified work reflecting Lavinée's intelligent and rigorous side as he entered his long twilight years. Technically, it is relatively easy to perform, but unlike other pieces included in this collection, it is written in a classical style. By constructing the performance with attention to the role of each voice, accents, and the contrast between slurs and staccatos, a three-dimensional quality akin to the minuet movement of a string quartet can be achieved.
This commentary is based on the commentary in Henri Lavinée, "Lavinée Piano Pieces" (Kawai Publishing, edited by Yasushi Ueda), published in 2015.
