Debussy: Pièce pour le Vêtement du blessé (Piece for the Garment of the Wounded) (1915), published as Page d’album (Album Page) (1933)
Composed in 1915, this piece was dedicated to Vêtement du blessé (Garment of the Wounded), an organization dedicated to aiding victims of World War I. Debussy's wife, Emma, was involved with this charity, and Debussy himself not only dedicated this work but also actively participated in the organization's efforts, including holding concerts, demonstrating exemplary dedication.
Although a short, waltz-like piece of only 38 measures, it can be understood as a three-part form, with the recurrence of the four-measure opening theme serving as a clue: Part 1 (measures 1–18), Part 2 (measures 19–20), and Coda (measures 31–32). In Part 1, after the theme is presented, motifs are fragmented, and a climax is formed at measure 13 by mf and the highest note in the right hand. This tension gradually subsides through arpeggiated passages in both hands, and Part 2 quietly begins at measure 19 with pp. From measure 23, as indicated by Un peu animé (somewhat lively), the tension rises again but relaxes without reaching the same peak as Part 1. The subsequent Coda consists of an eight-measure extended theme, closing the piece within a sustained tonic chord, albeit colored by temporary modulations.
