A piano duet composed in 1824 in Zseliz, Hungary, during the period when Schubert was teaching piano to the two daughters of Count Esterházy. Two years later, when it was published as Op. 54, it was dedicated to the singer Katharina von Lászny.
This three-movement work is filled with the charming Hungarian melodies that Schubert heard in this region. It was later arranged for piano solo by F. Liszt. Furthermore, a solo work by Schubert himself based on the third movement also exists (Hungarian Melody, D 817).
