An early Schubert sonata, it is an alternative version of D567, originally written in D major. Caution is advised regarding their numbering, as some sources designate both D567 and D568 as 'Sonata No. 7', while others label D567 as 'No. 7' and D568 as 'No. 8'. It should be noted that the title at the time of its first publication (1829) was 'Grand Sonata No. 3, Op. 122'. D567 was first printed with the publication of the old complete edition in 1897. The composition date for D.567 is 1817. While the exact composition date for D568 in E-flat major is uncertain, it is estimated to be from the mid-1820s onwards.
These two works are not merely transpositions. Given the additions and improvements, such as the newly composed Minuet in the third movement, they serve as excellent material for observing the growth and evolution of Schubert's compositional technique, as well as changes in musical taste across different eras. Like many of Schubert's works, it is a fine piece that harmoniously combines classical elegance with romantic sentiment.
