This piano collection was published following "Children's Land" and "Sunday Sonatina". Unlike "Children's Land", which avoided octaves in its harmony for children with small hands, this collection was composed freely without such restrictions. Similar to Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" and Ravel's "Ma Mère l'Oye", it is a collection of short pieces based on a theme, and that theme is "confectionery," beloved by both adults and children. Various confections such as Baumkuchen, Marron Glacé, and Kaki no Tane are featured, and the rich imagery of these sweets unfolds through diverse styles including jazz, Japanese-style, fughetta, atonality, and waltz. Confectionery is not a necessity for survival but a luxury food, an object of desire for the mind, embodying playfulness and joy. This sense of affirmation and richness serves as a basso continuo throughout the entire work. Impressive melodies, a solid rhythmic sense including polyrhythms, and the charm of colorful modulations are pervasive throughout the collection, pursuing the sound and appeal of the piano as an instrument played not only in classical music but in all music. It is highly popular among practitioners and frequently performed at recitals, having undergone over 150 reprints to date.
