Among the works published with opus numbers, this is Stamatty's last published work. L'oca del Cairo isMozart for which he completed only a trio in 1783, leaving most of it in draft form. It was first published in the mid-19th century by the André publishing house in Offenbach, Germany (with a preface dated 1855). At a time when interest in past music was growing, the writer Victor Wilder (1835–1892), also known as an excellent biographer of Mozart, wished to stage this opera in a "complete" form. He borrowed musical numbers from other operas and ensembles of the same period, such as Mozart's Lo sposo deluso KV430 (1785) and "Caro mio, pupille" KV480, which Mozart wrote for Bianchi's La villanella rapita (1785), added French lyrics, and published it as a two-act opera in 1867 through Heugel. The score left unfinished by Mozart was completed by the violinist and composer Charles Constantin (1835–1891). In the same year, it was performed at the Théâtre des Fantaisies Parisiennes (the image on the right shows a poster from the time of the performance). Based on this opera, several pianist-composers have written arrangements. Stamatty, however, chose Isabelle's Rondo, sung in Act 1, Scene 5, and wrote variations on it as a theme. This Rondo is an adaptation from Act 2 of Mozart's opera Zaïde KV344 (1780). The first half is an arrangement faithful to the opera's score; however, in accordance with performance practices of the time, many ornaments and cadenzas have been added during repetitions. In the latter variations, Stamatty displays brilliant technique, skillfully incorporating the melody within rapid passages placed in the right hand.
