The publication year is unknown, but the first edition dates back to at least before 1842. It was dedicated in the same year to Auber, who became director of the Conservatoire. This collection is not merely for technical exercises, but also aims primarily to familiarize students with pieces of various styles and genres. For example, No. 3 (see audio source) is written in a dance-like rhythm, and features a simple, melancholic melody that lingers in the ear, with repeated melodic patterns and rhythms. From a technical perspective, it is diversely developed, incorporating octaves and left-hand leaps, among other elements, thus fulfilling the original purpose of an etude: learning.
