Schnabel's last piano work. Compared to his works from the 1920s, including the Piano Sonata, the texture is simplified, and a work rich in expression is constructed from condensed material. These seven pieces are not merely arranged in alternating slow and fast tempos; rather, they are structured such that the contrast between slow and fast movements gradually intensifies.
In the first piece, a leisurely introduction is formed through the effective use of syncopation and off-beat rhythms, leading into the rhythmic second piece. The floating melodic flow of the third piece, which develops through variation, amplifies its momentum in the contrapuntal development of the fourth piece. The profound atmosphere of the fifth piece, where long trills support a monologue-like melody in the background, forms a vivid contrast with the agile and driving climax of the sixth piece. Finally, a playful epilogue follows, concluding the cycle with a theatrical gesture.
