Composed in 2010.
Biriba and Banreishi (Sugar Apple) are both names of tropical fruits that, despite their unusual appearance, are sweet and delicious when eaten. Biriba is affectionately known as "Countess's fruit," and Banreishi as "Count's fruit." As an aside (and as the title might suggest), this piece is also related to the guitar solo "Tropical Count."
The premiere of this piece took place at Monnaka Tenjo Hall, a live music venue. Given the nature of the venue, it was composed with the idea of creating a piece that could be performed with Mr. Oi. The premiere concert, part of the "POC Series," featured a continuous five-month run of challenging pieces, each comparable to an Olympic event. Therefore, I intentionally composed this piece, thinking that perhaps one lazy and redundant piece wouldn't be out of place. While "lazy and redundant" sounds negative, perhaps it's better described as a work that progresses as if the timeline is distorting.
In his review of my album "Hot Wind Saudade Theater," Seiji Choki stated, "Rather than a strategy to defamiliarize existing realities or make them sound like something else, it is a unique creation in the sense that it allows one to experience a strange virtual reality where reality itself is entirely replaced. It is akin to the sensation of being free from gravity when falling endlessly through smoke in a dream." I believe that this piece also conveys a similar world.
Incidentally, while Biriba is "Biriba" in English, Banreishi is often referred to as "Sugar apple" or "Sweetsop," but the term "Banreishi" itself doesn't seem to exist. "Reishi" apparently means "Lychee," so it wouldn't be strange for a Romanized spelling of "Banreishi" to exist... If anyone knows, please inform me.
