This work dates from around 1898, when the composer was approximately 13 years old. Together with Barcarolle, Op. 4, Song Without Words, Op. 5, Minuet, Op. 7, Impromptu, Op. 9(a), and Song Without Words, Op. 10, it was published in 1902 by the Harmonia publishing house in Budapest as Sechs Klavierstücke (Six Piano Pieces). In these early works, the influence of Romantic composers such as Mendelssohn (especially his Songs Without Words), Grieg (his Lyric Pieces), Tchaikovsky, and Schumann (his character pieces) is clearly discernible. Each of these pieces showcases Dora's transparent, youthful, and fresh sensibility within a very simple and naive compositional style.
This Papillon, Op. 6, is also a charming and excellent piece, sketching in sound the light, elegant, and at times slightly melancholic fluttering of a butterfly.
