The title Kenken-tobi refers to a children's game, commonly known as hopscotch, which involves drawing circles or squares on the ground and repeatedly hopping on one foot ("kenken") and landing on both feet ("pa"). According to the composer, this piece was composed recalling the game of kenken-pa.
The work largely consists of a three-part form: A (measures 1-8) – B (measures 9-17) – A (measures 18-26). The A section, in F major, presents the theme in the first four measures, which is then developed and concludes in the latter four measures. The B section begins in the subdominant key of B-flat major, then modulates to its parallel minor, A minor, and concludes with a half cadence on the V chord of the tonic key. The presence of dissonances can be said to express the instability and charm of the "kenken" (hopping) jumps. Subsequently, the piece returns to the A section, with slight variations added. The staccato markings reproduce the dynamism of the kenken-tobi game.
