Rahn, who was fond of quoting phrases from classical literary works, including Shakespeare, in his writings, also quotes a passage from Wordsworth's poem "The Fountain" in this piece: My eyes are dim with childish tears, My heart is idly stirred, For the same sound is in my ears Which in those days I heard. In Rahn's piece, C-sharp notes, imitating the sound of bells, are first monotonously repeated. Eventually, in the middle section, a lyrical melody replaces this, appearing first in the upper voice, then in the middle voice. In the recapitulation, although the accompaniment pattern changes, the C-sharp notes are repeated again. Rahn's approach, which avoids simplistic melodies and instead strives for a realistic depiction of bells, successfully intertwines with the nostalgia evoked by the vivid memory of bells sung in the poem, creating a unique, picturesque world.
