The Overture to "Don Giovanni," premiered in 1787, concludes in the original score with a half cadence on the dominant chord in F major, leading directly into Act I. Therefore, a separate coda is required to perform the overture independently in concerts. Although Mozart himself composed a concert coda, when Johann Andre & Co. published a score with their own added coda in 1795, it became widely performed and was habitually used until the latter half of the 20th century.
The Clementi version of the coda shares its concluding section with the Andre version, with an interpolated passage added immediately before it. This suggests that it might have been created due to dissatisfaction with the Andre version, despite an initial intention to perform it.
Although only 24 measures were newly composed, within them, Clementi demonstrates remarkable creativity through a highly condensed development, including the recapitulation of the first theme with altered bar structure, the combination of the first and second themes, and the use of the inverted form of the second theme.
