“Sonatine” was composed at the commission of Kazuki Yamada, conductor and musical advisor for the Shimoda Civic Culture Hall, and premiered on December 19, 2013, by Ayano Oishi. The title “Sonatine” is used here in the sense of “a small instrumental piece,” aiming to be a contemporary work accessible through straightforward musical language and technical demands. It consists of four movements, with bitonal sonorities permeating the entire work.

• I. A rhythmic play characterized by tight, irregular meters. The right and left hands engage in a playful pursuit.
• II. A waltz or parody based on a motif from A. Berg’s Piano Sonata.
• III. A fantasy based on simple chord progressions. There is a moment where a melody emerges.
• IV. A lighthearted march or rondo. In the coda, previously introduced motifs briefly resurface.
