Prelude (Allegro, December 5, 1950)
The opening structure, where the sixteenth-note motion and half-note stops are exchanged between both hands, is reminiscent of Bach's Prelude in E-flat Major from Book I of The Well-Tempered Clavier. The chorale interspersed in the middle sometimes reaches extremely low registers, creating an unsettling impression. Finally, with the chorale's cadential chord serving as a pedal, the eighth-note passages quietly fade away.
Fugue (4 voices, Moderato, December 7, 1950)
The subject is somber and tranquil. While possessing a complex four-voice texture where the voices are woven across a wide range, the piece as a whole remains calm and unagitated, maintaining a meditative character. Although there are sections, such as modulations where tension increases and strettos, that reach forte, these also gradually subside, moving towards a conclusion.
