The opening theme is based on chromatic descent and ascending diminished sevenths. While the melodic rhythm is simple, the distinctive color of the intervals employed is thereby accentuated. In the repetition of the theme, a counter-melody is added to the middle voice, generating shading in the music. The contrasting C major trio stands out for its dynamic accompaniment figures. The Soviet Scriabin scholar L. Ruptsova points out that a waltz-like rhythm is employed in this trio, asserting that this is precisely a distinguishing feature of Scriabin's mazurkas not found in those of Chopin or Lyadov.
