The eighth piece is an etude with chords added as inner voices to the melody. In the recapitulation, it becomes polyrhythmic. The bass line played by the left hand also serves as a counter-melody. Then, in the middle section, which becomes poco più vivo, the right hand plays a striking melody combining eighth notes and triplets. It is accompanied by the left hand, primarily playing chords. This piece is dedicated to Natalia Sekerina, who is said to be his first love, and is therefore known as "Natalia's Lento," highly admired for its lyrical beauty.
