Although some theories suggest it is a spurious work, its transmission through highly reliable sources created during Bach's lifetime makes its authenticity highly probable. From its musical content, it is considered an early work, likely composed around the Arnstadt period.
The Prelude is a piece consisting solely of passage work, entirely devoid of contrapuntal development. It commences with an interrogative ascending figure in 32nd notes and progresses towards its conclusion with a brilliant three-octave descending scale. Though brief, it serves as a highly effective prelude.
In the Fugue, a subject characterized by repeated notes is juxtaposed with a 16th-note motive employing arpeggiated chords. However, as the harmonic language largely remains within the confines of triads, the overall sonority becomes monotonous. The counterpoint in this piece is also not particularly inventive, with recurring appearances of the same combinations. Nevertheless, in the concluding section, a lengthy descending passage spanning well over three octaves emerges, clearly establishing a connection with the Prelude.
