Vivace moderato – Lively moderato (moderate tempo)

According to the first edition, the autograph manuscript's tempo marking was "vivace assai ed un poco sentimentale" (extremely lively and a little sentimental). This is a short piece, lasting approximately 40 seconds. Its structure is a simple binary form, with the left hand playing a dance-like accompaniment throughout the piece. The right hand repeats a melody that ascends with arpeggiated chords and then descends stepwise. It begins p (piano), and during the ascent, hairpins indicating cresc. (crescendo) are present, building anticipation. However, after the descent, it returns to p, as if losing confidence and abandoning hope. In measure 7, the third beat, which is an off-beat, is f (forte), immediately followed by p in measure 8, beat 1, suggesting emotional instability. The latter 4 measures (measures 9-12) convey a wavering mind, as if floating. The piece also ends dejectedly, with f following p.
