No. 14 in F minor
It begins with a funeral march (Lento quasi marcia funebre) characterized by augmented second progressions, leading to a heroic march (Allegro eroico) in the parallel major (F major). Then, as the motif develops through modulations to D major and E major, Gypsy-style music (Allegretto a la Zingarese) unfolds in A minor. Furthermore, after improvisatory passages in D-flat major, among others, it concludes with rapid music in F major (Vivace assai-Presto assai- Allegro brioso). Among the pieces in this collection, it is the one with the most prominent tonal development, and its structure is somewhat complex.
Dedicated to Hans von Bülow.
