Messiaen's Préludes is his first important piano work. Preceding this work are piano pieces such as La Dame de Shalott (1917) and La Tristesse du grand ciel blanc (1925), works that Messiaen, then under the age of 10, first attempted to compose. However, Préludes stands as the first work clearly imprinted with Messiaen's unique idiom, heralding the dawn of his magnificent later musical world. While the poetic titles given to each piece evoke Debussy's Préludes, the common elements in their musical language are not particularly pronounced, and Messiaen appears to have striven to distance himself from Debussy's world. Indeed, Préludes was a work submitted by Messiaen towards the end of his eleven-year period of study (1919-1930) at the Paris Conservatoire, and through presenting this collection to the public, Messiaen sought to demonstrate to the Parisian musical world that he possessed sufficient talent to pursue an independent career as a composer.
