An early sonata. Although no documents remain to definitively establish its composition date, it is presumed to be a work from the 1750s, when he earned his living as a music teacher. This is because its simple structure, clear harmony, and approachable, lucid musical ideas suggest it was composed for students. It was composed no later than 1766, the year it was listed in the Breitkopf & Härtel catalog.
The four short movements, each in a different time signature, effectively utilize their respective characters. The first movement (G major, 2/4 time, Allegro) adopts a small sonata form, with the dotted rhythm at the beginning of the first theme and the anacrusic rhythm of the second theme creating a cheerful atmosphere. The second movement (G major, 3/4 time) is a Minuet without a trio. The third movement (G major, 4/4 time, Andante) is a slow movement reminiscent of the Allemande dance. And the short, ternary form fourth movement (G major, 3/8 time, Allegro) features fast arpeggiated sixteenth notes taken up by either the right or left hand, concluding in a rushing manner.
