Haydn composed over 50 piano sonatas, and Sonata No. 23 is considered a work from his middle period. Given the performance techniques of the time, it appears to have been a technically demanding and difficult piece. However, today, alongside Piano Sonata No. 52, it is a popular work performed by many pianists.
First Movement: Allegro moderato
Sonata form. Even in the exposition alone, captivating themes appear one after another, such as the rhythmic first subject, the lightly singing transition, and the flowing second subject. Furthermore, the development section features dramatic passages with a succession of diminished seventh chords, creating a restless and lively impression.
Second Movement: Adagio
Binary form. A very romantic movement in the style of a Siciliana. Melodies reminiscent of cadenzas also appear between some themes, giving an improvisatory and almost Romantic impression.
Third Movement: Presto
Sonata form. Throughout the entire movement, the initial theme is consistently employed, with ingenuity shown in variations of tonality and articulation. This movement, like the first, shares many commonalities with it, such as the appearance of a succession of diminished seventh chords in the development section. However, the third movement is written more concisely with less development.
