Renowned as Granados's masterpiece from his mature period, this suite, subtitled "The Majas and Majos in Love—Scenes from Goya's Paintings—", consists of a total of six pieces: four in Part 1 and two in Part 2. The premiere was given by Granados himself in Barcelona. There is also an opera of the same name, which is an arrangement of this piano solo work with one additional piece. Incidentally, the opera is set in Madrid around 1800 and depicts the love story of the beautiful Rosario and Fernando, as well as jealousy towards the bullfighter Paquiro.
Part 1
- The first piece, <Los Requiebros> (Words of Love), is in E-flat major, 3/8 time, marked Allegretto con garbo y donaire (with purity and gallant grace). It is the music of Paquiro's courtship of Rosario. The theme is quoted from the 18th-century Spanish song-play Tirana del Tripili.
- The second piece, <Coloquio en la Reja> (Dialogue at the Window), is in 3/4 time, marked Andantino allegretto con sentimiento amoroso. It is the music of Fernando and Rosario whispering their loving thoughts. Its melody, while sweet, seems to foreshadow the tragedy to come.
- The third piece, <El Fandango de Candil> (The Fandango by Lamplight), is in 3/4 time, marked Un poco lentament avec beaucoup de rythme (somewhat slowly, with clear rhythm). It is written in the Phrygian mode. The fandango rhythm permeates the entire piece.
- The fourth piece, <Quejas, o La Maja y el Ruiseñor> (Complaints, or The Maja and the Nightingale), is in 3/4 time, marked Andante melancólico. It is exceptionally lyrical among Granados's works. The concluding section includes a cadenza imitating the song of a nightingale.
Part 2
- The fifth piece, <El Amor y la Muerte> (Love and Death), is in 3/4 time = 6/8 time, marked Animato e drammatico. This piece successively recalls the themes of all four pieces from Part 1. The latter half of the piece is marked "molto espressivo, e come annunciando la felicità nel dolore" (very expressively, and as if announcing happiness in pain). The piece concludes with the sound of bells, seemingly announcing the death of Fernando, who was defeated in a duel.
- The sixth piece, <Epílogo: Serenata del Espectro> (Epilogue: Serenade of the Spectre), is in 3/8 time, marked Allegretto misterioso. The Gregorian chant <Dies Irae> is quoted in the middle section. Although the music becomes somewhat lively, the sound of bells that resonated at the end of the previous piece closes the work once again.
Additionally, there is a piano arrangement of a piece added to the later opera of the same name, 'El Pelele: Escena goyesca' (The Straw Man: A Goyaesque Scene), which is sometimes treated as one of the pieces within the suite in recent performance practice.
