This is the sixth of the six Piano Sonatas, Op. 13 (Hob. XVI/21-26), composed in 1773 and dedicated to Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, consisting of three movements.
First Movement
The first movement, in A major, is in Allegro moderato and 4/4 time. It begins with the left hand, and the opening melody is led by the left hand. The development section (from m. 30) begins with the latter half of the opening theme. It is also interesting that the recapitulation (from the latter half of m. 59) begins on a different beat than the exposition. Throughout the movement, accompaniment figures featuring broken octaves and arpeggiated chords are characteristic.
Second Movement
The second movement is not included in the autograph manuscript and is written as a Minuet al Rovescio in the same key of A major as the first movement. It is a very concise movement of 44 measures, and the note values primarily consist only of quarter notes and dotted half notes.
Third Movement
The third movement, Finale, is in Presto and 2/4 time, in A major. Following the previous movement, it is also a very concise movement of 26 measures. It is written in ternary form, and the middle section (from m. 9) modulates to the dominant key of E major.
