Published in 1788 along with Hob.XVI:45 and 46. The exact date of composition is uncertain, but stylistically it is considered to be contemporary with Hob.XVI:45 from 1766 or around 1770.
The work consists of two movements, both in a minor key. It is regarded as succinctly embodying the characteristics of minor-key works from Haydn's so-called 'Sturm und Drang' period.
First Movement: Moderato, G minor, 4/4 time. Sonata form.
Repeat signs are present not only at the end of the exposition but also at the end of the development and recapitulation, showing remnants of binary form. The movement possesses a sense of unity, with the opening triplet figure being characteristically used in the second subject and throughout the movement. The melancholic first subject's descending stepwise motion by a fourth becomes a 'sigh' motif in the transition, and in the second subject, it transforms into an arpeggio descending by a full octave and a fifth.
Second Movement: Allegretto, G minor, 3/4 time.
A dance-like movement enlivened by ornaments such as trills. The overall structure is broadly divided into 'A', 'B', 'A', and 'Coda'. In the B section, the dotted, bouncing rhythm characteristic of the A section gradually recedes, and upon modulating to D major, it eventually becomes a smooth, stepwise motion. The Coda utilizes the G major material from the beginning of the B section, concluding in the major key.
