Mendelssohn's incidental music A Midsummer Night's Dream. As Rachmaninoff himself was a pianist, he seems to have greatly cherished and performed it as part of his concert repertoire (usually as an encore).
The piece is structured in G minor, 3/8 time, and written as Allegro vivace. While Mendelssohn's original is a busy, restless scherzo characterized by intricate scale-like melodies and predominantly 16th notes, Rachmaninoff's arrangement, though a piano miniature, evokes the orchestration of the original and is crafted with elaborate dynamics, ornamentation, harmonic richness, and virtuosity.
