Composed in 1897. Compared to the First Sonata, significant development is evident in many aspects of his compositional technique and musical language for piano, with the sense of flight, exaltation, and sensuality that would later become hallmarks of Scriabin's individuality already strongly present. Although it consists of two movements, the first movement accounts for two-thirds of the total performance time, making it the central focus of the work both temporally and thematically. Scriabin is said to have conceived this work inspired by a seascape he encountered during his travels. It evokes an impression of interweaving light and crashing waves. The second theme, appearing in the middle voice, is exceptionally beautiful. The second movement is a dynamic perpetuum mobile, seemingly imitating fiercely crashing waves.
