The two pieces compiled as Op. 10 are the first impromptus that are not "mazurka-like" among those published during Scriabin's lifetime (Op. 2-3, 7, 10, 12, 14). Nevertheless, as seen in the left-hand accompaniment patterns, a dance-like element still seems to persist in these two pieces.
These two pieces, likely composed in 1894, were sent to the publisher Belyayev and published the following February after Scriabin's own meticulous proofreading.
No. 1: F-sharp minor
Three-part form. The alternation of eighth notes and eighth-note triplets in the opening melody creates the effect of an improvisatory tempo rubato being performed. The melodic range is very wide and instrumental. The middle section modulates to F-sharp major, where a powerful left-hand octave accompaniment, dominated by dotted notes and triplet rhythms, prevails.
No. 2: A major
The structural framework of the themes in the outer sections involves an ascending melody being answered by a descending melody; however, the latter part of the descending melody incorporates intricate tuplets, creating an improvisatory character. The middle section, which appears after a light triplet-based coda, is characterized by hemiola formed by ascending thirds occurring every two beats and ties in the accompaniment, dominating almost the entire middle section.
