Believed to have been composed in his early twenties, this work, which demands brilliant virtuosity reminiscent of Liszt, was premiered by Scriabin himself at his debut concert in Paris in January 1896. It is thought that he composed this work primarily as a pianist, rather than a composer, intending to include it in his own concert programs. This piece, marked Allegro con fuoco, is written in sonata form in 4/4 time. The opening is characterized by a descending arpeggiated figure played in unison by both hands. This arpeggio subsequently reappears throughout the piece, sometimes in a single-hand part, and sometimes in octaves.
