Composed in January 1777 in Salzburg, this work has received exceptionally high acclaim among Mozart's early piano concertos.
The nickname "Jeunehomme" is said to derive from the name of the French female pianist who commissioned this work, though her correct name was Victoire Jenamy. The Jeunehomme Concerto, believed to reflect her abilities, demands advanced technique and reveals several original experiments. One such experiment is the immediate entrance of the solo piano at the very beginning of the first movement, which was unusual for concertos of that era. Although Mozart himself used this technique only once, it is thought to have influenced the later works of Beethoven.
Numerous cadenzas for this work have been preserved by Mozart: two cadenzas each for the first and second movements, and six Eingänge for the third movement. This suggests the work was performed frequently.
First Movement: Allegro, E-flat major, 4/4 time. Concerto sonata form.
The opening, which begins with an interplay between the orchestra and the solo piano, must have surprised audiences accustomed to piano concertos of that time. The movement progresses at a generally brisk tempo, highlighting the piano's virtuosic brilliance.
Second Movement: Andantino, C minor, 3/4 time.
A movement that evokes a sense of desolation almost unbelievable for a 21-year-old composer. This is the first minor-key slow movement in Mozart's piano concertos.
Third Movement: Rondo – Presto, E-flat major, 2/2 time. Rondo form.
It begins with a rondo theme reminiscent of buzzing bees. Another of Mozart's experiments worth noting is the insertion of a minuet in the middle section. It is also said that this might have been a nod to Noverre, Madame Jenamy's father, who was a dancer.
