From measures 1 to 10, although the tempo is slow and grave, there are also dramatic elements. It begins in G minor, modulates to D minor in measure 7, and concludes in measure 10 with a Picardy third in D minor. It is a point of divergence among performers whether to increase or decrease the volume in the D minor section. While the B in measure 6 and the B in measure 1 are the highest notes within measures 1 to 10, the B in measure 6, reached by a gradual ascent from measure 4, feels more tension-laden.
From measure 11, the tempo increases; however, this should be interpreted as an expression of beauty. The peak points are either measure 26, following two measures of continuous trills, or the B in measure 35, reached by an ascent from the second beat of measure 33; however, neither of these moments should be played oppressively or with extreme intensity. This overture is, rather, suited for an elegant performance.
