Although preludes necessitate improvisation, excessive freedom would render the notes, bar lines, and time signatures written in the score meaningless. There must be a reason why Handel meticulously notated 32nd notes, triplets, 16th notes, and so forth. Performers are advised to begin by recognizing the beat, always remembering the 4/4 time signature, regardless of the specific context.
Initially, read the score straightforwardly while feeling the beat, and only then proceed to deconstruct the piece improvisationally.
For arpeggiated sections, excluding scales, re-playing them as chords allows for the recognition of harmonic progression, consequently revealing how to appropriately apply dynamics.
While playing like a metronome is certainly not recommended, after recognizing the beat, try varying the tempo, differentiating between sections that should flow smoothly and those that should be emphasized by taking more time.
