Exposition

The main theme, which begins with the dominant chord of the subdominant key (IV degree) over a tonic pedal point, is stated three times, thereby solidifying its dominance (1st time: from m. 11 / 2nd time: from m. 22 / 3rd time: from m. 29).

After the transition (from m. 40), a musical idea resembling a secondary theme appears from m. 77; however, this is a transitional passage leading to the secondary theme. The theme itself begins from m. 91, where the dominant key, A major, is established. Following its statement (from m. 109), it leads to a codetta (from m. 131) based on a motive from the main theme.

Development + Recapitulation

Along with a G pedal point, the motive of the main theme is developed, ascending through the circle of fifths to G minor, D minor, A minor, E minor, and finally B minor. As the dominant chord of B minor fades away, a motive from the transition section emerges, leading into the recapitulation (from m. 269).

In the recapitulation, the statement of the theme (from m. 279) is slightly varied. After the transition and the transitional passage to the secondary theme, the secondary theme appears from m. 365 in the tonic key of D major. The statement of the secondary theme (from m. 383) is also presented without omission, and in the coda (from m. 407), the movement concludes with a recollection of the main theme.
