Second Movement: C major, 9/16 time, Variations

The 16-measure arietta theme is repeated in 8-measure sections by repeat signs, totaling 32 measures. The first 8 measures are in C major, while the latter half modulates to A minor, its relative key.

First Variation (m. 17–)

In the First Variation, a figural variation is performed, centered around the dominant G.

Second Variation (m. 33–)

The Second Variation changes the time signature to 6/16, and the variation is executed with a distinctive rhythm that evokes a swing feel.

Third Variation (m. 48–)

The Third Variation further changes the time signature to 12/32, and the variation is performed by arpeggiating the harmonic framework of the theme. Syncopated rhythms and the emphasis on weak beats by sforzando markings create an off-beat, almost jazzy element. Furthermore, the prominence of such small note values in music with a slow tempo can almost be described as pathological.

Fourth Variation (m. 65–)

In the Fourth Variation, the time signature returns to 9/16. The harmonic framework of the theme first appears in the low register as block chords over a tremolo centered on the tonic and dominant. It then transitions to a variation in the high register, supporting continuous ornamental passages of 32nd notes with single notes and chords. Fragments of the theme appear above and below trills, and a modulation to C minor, its parallel minor, forms the transition (m. 120–) to the final variation.

Fifth Variation (m. 131–)

In the Fifth Variation, the thematic figuration reappears clearly, supported by arpeggiated harmonies. Then, in the Coda (m. 160–), the theme emerges framed by an extended trill and chordal tremolos, finally concluding the piece by recalling the opening motive of the theme.
