The theme and the other three variations can all maintain the same dynamic markings. That is, the positions of forte and piano established in the theme should be maintained in the subsequent variations.

This theme is divided into a first half and a second half at the repeat sign, but for example, if the author were allowed to decide the dynamics at their discretion:

• Measures 1-4: p
• Measures 5-8: f
• Measures 9-12: f
• Measures 13-16: p

This means the dynamics change every four measures.

One may consider that the number of instruments in the ensemble changes every four measures, or one may think of it as a dialogue between singers, with measures 1-4 representing a female voice, measures 5-12 a male voice, and measures 13-16 a female voice again. The challenge lies in varying the mood of each section, and a hint is to create contrast between each section and the others.

This movement concludes with the third variation. The performer should slightly slow down the tempo in measures 63-64 to convey to the listener that the movement is ending.
