Interpretation Guide
Many people believe that "Vivace" means "very fast," but in Italian, it actually means "lively," and does not necessarily imply a rapid tempo. Nevertheless, this third movement will not reveal its charm unless played as fast as possible.
A tempo of around 270 eighth notes per minute, or 90 measures per minute, is desirable. This movement clearly expresses Haydn's optimistic character; it should not be played slowly, carefully, or seriously, but rather with an idea of surprising the listener, almost to the point of being a little reckless.
If the tempo is too fast, for example, in measures 1-4, the ornament on the first beat of the right hand might not fit within the first beat and could extend into the second beat. Do not worry about this; maintain the tempo without slowing down.
Consider this movement to be full of playfulness, with its sudden changes in dynamics and shifts from major to minor keys, and enjoy playing it.
