This is a very optimistic and joyful first movement. It is undoubtedly a piece to be played with a smile rather than a frown. Although it shifts to minor keys and modulates along the way, it is never truly serious, and should be regarded as a consistently delightful drama. Vibrancy is crucial in this first movement. Rather than being too slow or having a blurred tone, it should proceed with clear articulation, lightness, and rhythm.

Since dynamic markings vary across editions, there is no absolute need to strictly follow the dynamic markings of the edition you are using, and you are encouraged to experiment with dynamics as you see fit.

A variety of timbres is also desired. For instance, let's try playing the harsh chords in measures 9-10 (F minor) with a distinctly different timbre from the suddenly optimistic measures 11-12 (dominant of E-flat major).

Furthermore, where repetitions occur, vary the dynamics. For example, measures 18 and 19 have identical figures and rhythms. Play one softer and the other louder to avoid identical dynamics.
