This piece was written by Ravel for a composition competition organized by a music magazine, and due to the bar count regulations, it is a small-scale work. However, each movement features charming melodies and abundant delicate sonorities, while adhering to classical forms and being concisely structured, making it a truly splendidly complete Sonatine. The work is in three movements, but the first theme of the first movement reappears in the second and third movements with variations in harmony and rhythm, treated in a cyclical manner. It was highly acclaimed from the time of its composition and is one of the pieces that helped spread Ravel's name.
First Movement: Modéré (Moderately)
A melody with a delicate brilliance is sung lyrically, masterfully structured within a concise sonata form.
Second Movement: Mouvement de Menuet (Minuet Movement)
A minuet without a trio. Graceful and charming melodies flow over economical harmonies. At the conclusion, a section appears that Ravel himself described as "a bow after the dance."
Third Movement: Animé (Lively)
Written in a free rondo form, featuring lively passages.
