The opening first theme conveys a strong will and a sense of pride. As confident bass octaves resound, they gain overtones, creating a profound richness, and the piano's capabilities are utilized to their fullest. In contrast, the second theme is a slightly melancholic melody, played sweetly and pastorally. After a joyful and percussive, almost violent development section, it proceeds to a recapitulation with increased volume. Finally, the second theme, marked gaio (joyfully), appears briskly at ff, ascends to fff in octaves in both hands, and concludes majestically amidst excitement.

The first movement, as Ginastera himself explained, "play non-legato where slurs are not written, and martellato where the dynamics are loud," strikingly contrasts the valiant and percussive sound characteristic of the Malambo with the simple and lyrical melody reminiscent of the tranquility of the Pampa. Such performance techniques, along with parallel thirds, superimposed fourths, and rapidly changing meters, are common characteristics found in Ginastera's works.
