The second movement is constructed from twelve-tone rows from the outset, and its geometric music evokes an atmosphere that is even mystical and supernatural. A striking contrast is evident between quiet measures featuring continuous eighth notes containing twelve-tone elements and syncopated passages where the melody sings out with ample volume. The occasional arpeggios, reminiscent of guitar playing techniques, and the scale patterns identical to open strings, recall the presence of the gaucho minstrel, the payador. What faintly appears in the darkness of the pampas: is it the dull gleam of a dagger held by an outlaw gaucho, or perhaps a supernatural entity believed in by the indigenous people living in the pampas? It is a movement where the presence of twelve-tone elements stimulates various imaginations.
