Juan José Castro (1895-1968), an Argentine composer and conductor, studied under Vincent d'Indy in Paris during his time abroad. After returning to Argentina, he became a conductor at the Teatro Colón and taught at the National Conservatory as a contemporary music composer. Castro was instrumental in launching Ginastera's career as a composer. Ginastera's first acclaimed work, Panambí, was originally a ballet, which Castro encouraged him to arrange for orchestra (the work was premiered in 1937 at the Teatro Colón, conducted by Castro himself). This piece, dedicated to Castro, is unusually for Ginastera, written with urban tango music in mind. This, too, could be considered "experimental" in a sense.
